Opera New England of Cape Announces Scholarship Winners for 2009

Published on Wednesday, March 17, 2010

Opera New England of Cape Cod (ONECC) is proud to continue awarding scholarships to graduating high school students who plan to pursue a degree in music and are residents of Cape Cod or the Islands.

In 1999 we awarded our first scholarship with the generosity of The Alexandra Horbach Memorial fund. Alexandra Horbach supported our Children's Opera program and felt strongly that young people should have the opportunity to be exposed to opera. Primary graders were bussed from Cape & Islands schools to see a Children's Opera from Sarah Caldwell's group in Boston. Later a NYC group did the same. Safety consideration with transportation and other issues forced ONECC to terminate the Children's Opera program. The Alexandra Horbach Memorial Fund continued the support of Cape Cod students and encouraged music education.

In 2000 the Opera Board wanted to honor our own Lucille Johnson by giving a scholarship in her name. From the beginning of ONECC, Lucille has worked tirelessly to keep professional opera coming to the Cape. Without Lucille giving her heart, soul and time for many years, ONECC would not have continued. Thankfully, today, we have a fine president and board who, as volunteers, have the strong desire to continue bringing opera productions to Cape Cod.

In 2009 the Board of Directors instituted a new scholarship -The George H. Riley and Nina L. Riley Scholarship. The scholarship honors the long time support and generosity of George and Nina Riley.
