Opera New England of Cape Cod Announces Scholarships for 2008

Published on Thursday, August 28, 2008

Opera New England of Cape Cod Is proud to continue giving scholarships to graduating high school students who are residents of Cape Cod and the Islands and who plan to pursue degrees in music.

In 1999 we awarded our first scholarship with the generosity of The Alexandra Horbach Memorial fund. Alexandra supported The Children's Opera and felt strongly that young people should have the opportunity to be exposed to opera. 5th graders were brought from different schools on the Cape & Islands to see a traveling Children's Opera from Sarah Caldwell's group in Boston; later a group from NYC did the same. It became too costly for schools to pay for busing children so we had to terminate the Children's Operas. Hence money from the Alexandra Horbach Memorial now goes for a scholarship each year.

In 2000 the Opera Board wanted to honor Lucille Johnson by giving a scholarship in her name. From the beginning, Lucille worked tirelessly to keep professional opera coming to the Cape. Without Lucille giving her heart, soul and time for many years, Opera New England of Cape Cod would not have continued. Thankfully we have a fine president and board who, as volunteers, have the strong desire to continue bringing the National Lyric Opera productions-live from NYC!

This year The $1,000 Alexandra Horbach Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Bryce Garner of Sandwich. Bryce will attend The Manhattan School of Music this fall. The $1,000 Lucille Johnson Scholarship was awarded to Samantha Walker of Dennisport who will attend Wheaton College this fall with a double major of music and psychology.
