A shipwreck takes our heroine to the harem of Bey Mustafa in Algiers, looking for her lover while fending off the Bey, who is bored with his present wife (?) looking for a new wife, preferably European. Whew!

This typical Rossini plot with characters coming and going promises exotic characters, exotic music and a happy ending for all (almost).
