Opera New England of Cape Cod was founded in 1977 with the mission to present and promote interest in opera on Cape Cod. The first presentation was Verdi's Rigoletto produced by Opera New England, a residence company of Opera Company of Boston with the famed conductor Sarah Caldwell. Opera New England traveled to seven regions in New England performing professional fully staged and orchestrated operas. Sarah Caldwell's operas were presented on Cape Cod for over twelve years/thirteen seasons.
For the next nine seasons our productions came from New York City under the direction of Donald Westwood, Artistic Director for Opera Northeast. Don Westwood is recognized for both traditional and innovative productions encompassing opera, operetta, American musical theater and programs for young audiences
From our 22nd Season to date Opera New England of Cape Cod has been presenting National Lyric Opera Productions under the brilliant direction of Michael Capasso, Artistic Director. For the last 5 years all productions have come direct from the stage of Dicapo Opera Theatre where Mr Capasso is their General Director.
National Lyric Opera has kept up Opera New England of Cape Cod's fine tradition of presenting professional, fully staged and fully-orchestrated, opera on Cape Cod.
Opera New England of Cape Cod is an energetic organization with a committed Board of Directors and Committees who make these outstanding operas possible on Cape Cod every year.
Every year, Opera New England of Cape Cod awards scholarships to the many talented young artists and performers on Cape Cod to assist in their education or professional endeavors.
